Understand the recommendation

The label is only the beginning.

These are the practical differences the finder uses. They are specification guidance—not product claims or a substitute for each manufacturer's instructions.

What extraction capacity means

A 10L, 12L or 20L label describes a maximum daily extraction under stated test conditions. Everyday collection can be much lower because temperature and relative humidity change performance. Compare like-for-like test conditions, not just the number on the box.

Compressor or desiccant

Compressor models condense moisture on a cold surface and are usually the efficient starting point in heated rooms. Desiccant models use an absorbent material and retain useful performance in cooler or unheated spaces, although they may use more power.

Temperature changes the answer

A compressor model's extraction rate normally falls as the room gets colder. If a garage, cellar or utility room is regularly cold, compare performance at that temperature or consider desiccant technology.

Laundry adds a moisture load

Regular indoor drying increases the work the appliance must do. A laundry mode, useful airflow and enough capacity can matter more than extra app features. Keep the room closed while drying and follow the appliance instructions.

Noise is a specification

Published decibel figures should identify the operating mode. A low figure at quiet speed does not describe every fan or laundry setting. Consider where the unit will run, particularly near bedrooms and workspaces.

Tank or continuous drainage

A larger tank reduces emptying. Continuous drainage can suit longer runs, but only where the manufacturer permits it and the hose has a safe route. Tank-full shut-off remains an important basic feature.

An important boundary

Manage moisture. Investigate the cause.

A dehumidifier can reduce moisture in the air. It does not repair a leak, rising damp, a structural defect or inadequate ventilation. Persistent or worsening damp needs its cause investigated.

Buy from a reputable UK-facing retailer or manufacturer, check safety markings and instructions, keep airflow clear, maintain filters and register the appliance so you can receive recall information.
